lyrics

When I was driving through Delaware, Coca-Cola and cigarettes, heading south to Assateague, I had a loaf of bread in the passenger seat. On an old state map there's a line I'm tracing, big black geese and maple trees, left a ten dollar bill though it should have been four, receipts from rest stops on the floor. Parked my car where the beach began, lighter shaking in the howling wind, ducked beneath a chain link fence, saw the ocean full of innocence. Hands on the wheel and the windows wide, freezing air but I feel just fine, it's hard to see much in the winter night, I've got to get back before it's light.

Heartbreak and adventure
there are many ways to ride
if I choose to ride the highway
must I lone it through this life

Let it roll, let it ride
Keep on heading down that line

Key in the door and the lights all out, on my toes in the kitchen didn't make a sound, I hate the past but I want it back, sirens going and my eyes all slack. Scribbled in a notebook, tattooed on my arm, knifed in a tree in my old backyard, never told a soul except the tollbooth man, I've got a little glass jar and a bit of sand.

Heartbreak and adventure
there are many ways to ride
if I choose to ride the highway
must I lone it through this life

Let it roll, let it ride
Keep on heading down that line
